5TH MARCH 2006 - GOZO HEAT VS HOGS (Sannat)

GOZO ARE IN THE FINALS

The Gozo Tornadoes made it to their seventh consecutive National League Championship Series, beating the Mustangs 10-9.  Charlie Attard's effective pitching, Steven Galea's two-run blast and Gary DeBrincat's timely hits were enough to beat the Mustangs and put Gozo through.  Mustangs rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh, but popped up to first with the winning run in scoring position for the third and final out of the game.  Gozo became the first third-placed team to make it through to the final series of the season.

Gozo will now face reigning champions, the Mellieha Northenders, in a three-game series over the next three weekends.

MUSTANGS STUN GOZO

The new Gozo uniforms made their debut last Saturday, but the Mustangs played well enough to cruise over the Tornadoes in a ten-to-four win.  Mustangs scored eight runs in the fourth, to give Pat Pace his first win against Gozo this season.

On a positive note, Jeff Tabone started off the mound, were he struck out seven batters in four innings.  Tabone's last outing on the mound was during the 2006 playoffs.  Reliever Steven Galea came in the fifth, and struck out five batters in three innings.  The Mustangs' defense prevented Gozo from getting on base all game long.

Next game will be on Sunday, 3rd June against the Sharks.  First pitch will be thrown at 2pm.

MELLIEHA SPOILS GOZO'S VICTORY RUN

The Northenders have finally caught up with Gozo, beating the northern neighbors twelve to two.  Many baseball fans have been waiting for months for the two rivals to face each other, and were awarded with great baseball up to the fourth inning.  Gozo had a two nothing lead half way through the game, when Mellieha finally took advantage of some costly errors from the opposition.  The Northenders were all over starting pitcher Charlie Attard, and took an eight-to-two lead in the bottom of the fourth.  Mellieha then scored another four runs in the fifth, to end the game on mercy rule.

Now, both Gozo and Mellieha share first place.  Gozo will be back in action this weekend, against the Mustangs.

GOZO STAY ON TOP WITH ANOTHER WIN

Galea hit his 1st HR of the season last Sunday

Gozo is making a run for the championship this year, winning four straight now.  It was also the fourth straight game the that Tornadoes won on mercy rule, by finishing the game with a 19 to 5 score in favor of the Tornadoes.  In the first four games of the season, Gozo scored 81 runs while allowing just 17 runs.

The Tornadoes started off strong, scoring six runs in the top of the first off Sharks' pitcher Giancarlo Tolu.  The Sharks responed back in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs off Gozo's starter, Steven Galea.  The Sharks gave up on Gozo in the top of the fourth, as they gave up several errors to allow ten Gozo runs to cross the plate.  Galea nearly completed the game, pitching three and one-third of an inning, allowing five runs.  This was his second start and pitching appearance of the season.

Galea also left his mark offensively, slugging his fourth career homerun off Tolu.  This was the second consecutive game that Gozo managed to connect for a homer.  Shaun Chircop had an excellent offensive day, hitting 3 for 4.  Gozo managed to hit sixteen hits of Tolu.

Next week, the National League will have a break in order to accommodate national team practice, and then Gozo will be back in action on Sunday the 6th of May against the defending champions, the Mellieha Northenders.  This will be the first game between the two rivals and Gozo will attempt to extend their lead to two in the National League standings.  First pitch will be thrown at 2pm at the Marsa Baseball Field

TORNADOES COME FROM BEHIND TO WIN THEIR THIRD STRAIGHT

The Gozo Tornadoes faced the Mustangs last Sunday, in front of a nice crowd at the Marsa Baseball Field.  Starting on the mound for both teams were Charlie Attard and Pat Pace.  The Mustangs got off to a fast start, after Mark Buttigieg hit a grand-slam into left field, to make the score 4-0.  In the top of the second, the Gozitan Mark Buttigieg responded back with a solo homerun to deep left field, trotting around the bases for the first time in his career.  Gozo scored another two runs in the inning, to make it 4 - 3 Mustangs.  In the bottom of the inning, the Mustangs scored another two runs off Charlie, to extend their lead to 6-3.

But that was basically it for the Mustangs, as a combination of brilliant hitting, pitching and base running allowed Gozo to run all over the Mustangs, scoring 23 runs in the next 4 innings.   There were no holes in Gozo's lineup from the 3rd inning onwards, as every batter in the lineup was fighting pitches and getting the hits Gozo needed.  Right fielder Rodney Debono had a very productive day, hitting well off Mustang pitching.  Final score, 26-6.

Gozo will now face the Sharks next Sunday.  New team photo and statistics will be updated on this website this week.

LEADERS MELLIEHA WIN FOUR IN A ROW

Last Sunday, the Gozo Tornadoes failed to make it two-in-a-row by losing to league leaders Mellieha nine to three.  Gozo started off well, with a one-two-three inning in the top of the first, but Mellieha responded back thanks to Mike Bartolo's pitching.  By the end of the top of the fourth, Mellieha were up six to nothing.  Gozo fought back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Christopher Mercieca and a RBI by first baseman Josef Vella.  Starting pitcher Jeff Tabone pitched five innigns, allowing three earned runs and five hits.  Reliever Charlie Attard quickly got two outs on three pitches in the top of the sixth, but gave up a solo homerun to last year's MVP of the year, Keith Bartolo.  Mellieha scored another run off Attard.

Mellieha are now at the top of the standings with four wins, and with a two and a half game cushion between them and Gozo.

The Tornadoes will now be facing the Gzira Mustangs next Sunday, at Sannat.  Game starts at 2.30pm.  The Heat will be playing against the Maverics before the National League game, starting at 12pm.

HEAT FAIL TO MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW

The Gozo Heat played their second game of the season last Saturday, losing to Mellieha 15-9.  Making their debuts in the reserve league were Keith Bugeja, Jonathan Fava, Paul Formosa and Josef Vella.  Vella also made his pitching debut, starting on the mound and pitching three innings.  Rodney Debono came into relief for Vella in the fourth inning.

The Heat will now face the Maverics on the 2nd of April.

FROM THE LOCAL PRESS

The Gozo Tornadoes edged the Gzira Mustangs in a tightly contested game this past Saturday in Marsa.  Gozo struck first and ran up a 9-2 lead after 2 and a half innings, but Gzira fought back and scoring 5 in the bottom of the third to make it 9-7.  Gozo brought on Charles Attard in the fourth inning to pitch and he stopped the Gzira offence with his overpowering fastball to secure the win for Gozo.  Gzira will hope to rebound when they face Mellieha next Saturday at 14:30 in Marsa.

FIRST WIN FOR TORNADOES

Yesterday afternoon the Tornadoes played their second game of the season, beating the Mustangs 11-9.  Gozo got on the board in the first, thanks to consecutive hits by Jeff Tabone, Shaun Chircop and Steve Ellis.  In the bottom of the inning, the Mustangs scored two off starter Jeff Tabone, making his first start of the season.  Tabone worked three innings, striking out five, allowing seven runs and four hits.

Relief pitcher Charlie Attard pitched the last four innings of the game, striking out seven, allowing two runs and four hits.  Attard also earned his first career save.  Great performance by third baseman Rodney Debono, who played very well defensively.

The Tornadoes will now have the weekend off, and will be facing the Mellieha Northenders on March the 26th.

GOZO FALL TO CHAMPIONS MELLIEHA

Many have expected this game to be an exciting one between the two teams who have been champions over the last five year, but it turned out that Mellieha were all over Gozo, taking advantage of many errors by the Gozitan defense.  Mellieha jumped to a big lead after the first, scoring seven runs off Charlie Attard.  Mellieha scored another four runs in the second to make the score 11-0.  Gozo started off a small rally in the third, scoring three runs off Keith Bartolo, but were quickly shut down by another eight runs in the next two innings.

Steven Galea came in relief in the top of the fifth, giving up a 2-run home run to rookie Malte Schwenke over the short right-field fence.  The Tornadoes will now face the Mustangs next Saturday at Marsa.  The game starts at 2:30pm

FANTASTIC DEBUT FOR THE HEAT

Last Sunday, the Gozo Heat made their debut in the Reserve League by beating the Hogs twelve to six in Sannat Gozo. A lovely crowd witnessed this historical event, as the Heat became the fourth Gozitan baseball team to ever play in an official MABS league.  The previous three teams were the Tornadoes, Thunders and Astros.

Starting pitcher Mark Buttigieg had an outstanding performance, keeping the Hogs off-balance with his pitches.  The Heat's defense performed very well, which shows encouragement for the Tornadoes' future.  Timely hits by Christopher Mercieca, Justin Psaila and Steven Galea have helped Gozo take the lead in the first.  The Heat scored a maximum of five runs in the first two innings of the game.  The Hogs rallied back in the top of the third, but this was not enough to cause Gozo any trouble.

The Heat will now face the Mellieha Rookies at the National Baseball Field next Saturday at 1130 am.  Fans who want to cross over to Malta to watch the game should contact Charles Attard on 79603482.

BIG DAY FOR GOZO

Just 24 hours before Opening Day, the Gozitan team are preparing themselves for their first two games of the season.  The Gozo Heat will be facing the Hogs at 10:30 am while the Gozo Tornadoes will be facing champions Mellieha Northenders at noon.  .  Both games will be held at the Sannat Field.

The Gozo Heat have a lot of promising young players, such as Rodney Debono, Christopher Mercieca and Justin Psaila.  Veterans Mark Buttigieg, Steven Galea and Josef Vella should help our young talent throughout the league.  The Gozo Tornadoes have a lot of old faces on the team, but most of them will be playing in new positions.

NEW UNIFORMS ON THE WAY

The first few games of the 2006 season will be the last time we will ever see Gozo wearing orange jerseys.  The Gozo Baseball Club have ordered a new set of jerseys, choosing purple as their trademark color instead of orange.  The new 2006 jerseys will be grey, with purple piping and the word 'GOZO' written across the chest.
